PARKS

Compared to our Nordic Neighbours, Denmark is a very young National Park Nation. Even though the idea of national parks has been in development for a long time, the development has been a long way coming, as Denmark is a geographically small country, with a large degree of populated areas and cultivated farmland, hence few official wilderness areas.

In 2002, the government, with its initiative on the future of nature in Denmark, began pilot projects for national parks. The aim was to allow nature more space to develop within larger contiguous areas and to enhance its dynamics. Furthermore, the population was to have the opportunity to experience and access more magnificent nature, which holds special significance both nationally and internationally. Between 2003 and 2005, with support from the Outdoor Council, pilot projects and three feasibility studies were conducted to explore the practical possibilities for national parks. In each project, a local steering group was tasked with, in collaboration with the local population, developing a proposal for what a national park could look like in their area.

These recommendations led to the decisive phase of drafting a national park law in Denmark. On May 24, 2007, the Danish Parliament passed the national park law, paving the way for the establishment of national parks.
